WeRide has received approval to operate its commercial Robotaxi service in Beijing, marking a major step in the expansion of autonomous transportation in urban areas. The company, valued at $4.55 billion, will provide ride-hailing services between the Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area and Beijing South Railway Station. This development strengthens WeRide’s presence in China’s growing autonomous vehicle market, where the company continues to expand its unmanned commercial operations.

The newly authorized service covers a 600-square-kilometer area, allowing passengers to access self-driving taxis through the "WeRide Go" mobile application. Beijing South Railway Station, a key transportation hub with over 150,000 daily passengers during peak times, is expected to be a central point for Robotaxi demand.

WeRide has been actively expanding its autonomous vehicle operations despite facing financial challenges. The company reported $52.02 million in revenue over the past twelve months, though it has seen a 19% decline. Analysts continue to monitor WeRide’s financial performance, as its stock price, currently at $16.58, is projected to rise between $19.16 and $23.02. Investment firm JPMorgan recently initiated coverage of WeRide with an Overweight rating, citing its strong market position and advancements in autonomous driving technology.

The approval to operate in Beijing reflects growing confidence in WeRide’s self-driving capabilities. The company has launched services in nearly ten cities worldwide, including Guangzhou, Nanjing, and international locations such as Abu Dhabi and Zurich. The expansion of its Robotaxi network signals a broader trend toward autonomous mobility solutions in high-traffic areas, such as railway stations and airports.

WeRide’s global growth strategy extends beyond passenger transportation. The company recently introduced the Robovan W5, a Level 4 autonomous logistics vehicle designed for urban deliveries. The vehicle features a 5.5 cubic meter cargo capacity, a maximum payload of 1,000 kg, and an operational range of up to 220 kilometers. Meanwhile, in partnership with Renault Group, WeRide has begun a trial of its Robobus service in Barcelona, testing fully autonomous public transport solutions in Spain.

WeRide’s strategic moves are being closely watched by industry experts as autonomous driving continues to gain traction worldwide. The company’s December 2024 partnership with Uber, aimed at deploying a significant Robotaxi fleet in the Middle East, further underscores its commitment to expanding self-driving services across global markets.

JPMorgan analysts emphasized WeRide’s strong position in the industry, highlighting its presence in 30 cities across nine countries. They believe the company is well-positioned to benefit from increasing global adoption of autonomous vehicle technologies.

A WeRide spokesperson commented:

"This approval in Beijing is a milestone in our journey to bring autonomous mobility to more people. Our commitment to safety, efficiency, and innovation remains at the forefront of our expansion strategy."
