2,000 Fewer Taxis in Northern Ireland Since 2020: Belfast’s Challenge
Last Updated: 12/14/2024
Taxi shortages in Northern Ireland affect daily life, with Belfast facing the most significant decline. Key challenges include fewer drivers and rising operational costs.
Northern Ireland has seen a significant decline in the number of taxis operating since December 2020, with over 2,000 fewer taxis registered, according to the Department for Infrastructure (DfI).
This reduction, about 20% of the total, has affected all council areas, with Belfast experiencing the largest drop, from 3,597 taxis in December 2020 to 2,854 in June 2024. Similarly, Derry & Strabane dropped from 1,294 to 929.
Reasons Behind the Decline in Taxi Numbers
The sharp decline in taxi numbers can be attributed to several factors. COVID-19 played a significant role, with many drivers leaving the profession due to reduced demand during the pandemic. Others have struggled with the rising costs of maintaining vehicles, obtaining licenses, and concerns about safety.
These challenges have been felt most acutely in Belfast, where the decrease in taxis has created difficulties for people trying to get around.
Shortage of Active Drivers
While the number of taxi licenses has fallen, the number of active drivers has also decreased significantly. Stephen Anton, Belfast taxi boss and spokesperson for Fonacab, pointed out that while around 7,000 taxi licenses are still active, only about 5,791 drivers are operating. Factors like holidays and sick leave further reduce the number of available drivers, leaving only about 1,500 drivers available at any given time to serve the entire region.
This shortage of active drivers is a key issue affecting Northern Ireland’s taxi service, especially as the number of drivers available to cover all shifts is far too low to meet demand.
Economic and Public Impact
The ongoing taxi shortage has implications for both the public and the economy. People are struggling to find taxis for essential activities like getting to work or attending appointments, particularly affecting vulnerable groups such as the elderly and those with disabilities.
The decline in taxi availability also risks hindering local businesses by reducing foot traffic in city centers like Belfast, where people are increasingly deterred from visiting due to transport difficulties.
Government and Industry Response
The DfI’s data shows the overall reduction in taxi licenses across Northern Ireland, but solutions are needed to address the shortage of active drivers. Stephen Anton has called for the government to review the taxi licensing process to make it easier for new drivers to enter the industry. He stresses the importance of balancing accessibility with the safety and vetting standards needed to ensure public safety.
In addition to reforming licensing, support for existing drivers is crucial, as many are working under increasingly difficult conditions. The ongoing driver shortage underscores the need for a comprehensive strategy to address both the immediate and long-term challenges facing the Northern Ireland taxi industry.

As the number of registered taxis continues to fall, the need for immediate action becomes more pressing. Addressing both the regulatory issues and the real-world challenges faced by drivers is vital to ensuring that Northern Ireland’s taxi service remains reliable and accessible for all residents.
