Scottish Borders Council has approved a 26.7% increase in taxi fares, citing rising fuel, insurance, and wage costs. The change is scheduled to take effect in April.

A significant increase in taxi fares across the Scottish Borders is set to take effect next month, marking a 26.7% rise in rates. The change, approved by the Scottish Borders Council (SBC) in December, will be implemented on April 14 if no formal objections are submitted by March 20. According to a recent report, discussions surrounding the fare hike have been ongoing, with officials emphasizing the need to address rising operational costs.
John Curry, SBC’s director of infrastructure & environment, highlighted that no objections had been received thus far.
John Curry stated:
"The increase will coincide with the school holiday period to allow operators the opportunity to have meters set and avoid further delay to the increase and obviously impact their income."
Scottish Borders Council conducts taxi fare reviews every 18 months, consulting both operators and the public before making changes. The last completed review was in August 2019. The subsequent 2021 review was delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic and operational challenges.
Taxi operators have reported rising financial pressures, with costs increasing by approximately 144%. Key factors contributing to these challenges include higher expenses for fuel, insurance, and wages. The fare adjustment aims to support the industry in managing these financial strains.
