London’s black cab industry faces an uncertain future as FREENOW, one of the city’s leading taxi-hailing platforms, appoints Danny O’Gorman as its new general manager for the UK market. His leadership comes at a critical time when the number of licensed taxis in the capital has declined significantly over the past decade, with figures dropping from 22,810 in 2013-14 to just 14,470 in 2023-24. The industry is also grappling with increasing financial pressures, as rising costs and restrictions continue to impact driver earnings and operational sustainability.

A recent report by the Centre for London warns that, without immediate government intervention, black cabs could disappear entirely from London’s streets by 2045. The industry has been struggling with regulatory changes, competition from ride-hailing apps, and declining driver numbers. O’Gorman’s role will involve advocating for policies that support the sector, increasing demand for rides, and ensuring sustainable growth for taxi services in London and beyond.

FREENOW, which already has a strong presence in major UK cities including Manchester, Edinburgh, and Oxford, aims to expand its operations further. The company’s European general manager, Tim Arnold, highlighted the importance of O’Gorman’s experience in the taxi sector, stating:

O’Gorman previously served as general manager for FREENOW in Ireland, where the company has established itself as a market leader. His professional background includes senior roles at Amazon and Catawiki, along with a law degree from Trinity College Dublin. Expressing his commitment to the role, O’Gorman said:
