Liverpool, UK – Merseyside Police have released CCTV footage showing two men they are searching for in connection with a shooting incident involving a taxi passenger in Liverpool. The 27-year-old victim was shot as he exited a private hire vehicle on Denman Drive, Tuebrook, around 21:40 GMT on Monday, October 28.
The victim managed to take himself to the hospital, arriving at 22:10 GMT, with a gunshot wound to his lower leg. Authorities believe this incident may be connected to organized crime and have urgently requested public assistance in identifying the two individuals seen in the footage.
Private Hire Vehicle Passenger Injured in Reckless Attack
The shooting occurred shortly after the victim stepped out of a private hire taxi, underscoring growing safety concerns among taxi and private hire drivers in the area. As private hire vehicles are often involved in such situations unintentionally, taxi and private hire driver associations have highlighted the risks to drivers and passengers alike. This case emphasizes the importance of rigorous licencing and security protocols to protect those involved in the public and private hire transportation industry.
Police Seek Public’s Help in Identifying Men Seen Near Scene
Detectives have now shared images showing two men walking along Prescot Road near the time of the attack, captured at 22:07 GMT. Detective Chief Inspector Phil Atkinson from Merseyside’s firearms investigation team stated that he hopes these images could “jog someone’s memory” and lead to valuable information.
He urged witnesses to come forward as a matter of urgency, stressing the seriousness of the attack, which “could clearly have had much more serious if not fatal consequences.” The incident not only raises alarms for public safety but also highlights the need for vigilance among taxi and private hire vehicle operators, who often find themselves exposed to unpredictable dangers on the job.
Public Support Needed to Combat Organized Crime
Det Ch Insp Atkinson emphasized that information from the public is essential to dismantling the organized crime groups responsible for such acts. He appealed to anyone with information to aid police efforts, stating, “Information from the public is vital if we are to break down the organized crime groups who bring misery to our streets.”
The incident has since drawn attention to the safety challenges faced by private hire drivers in Liverpool and the broader need for enhanced driver licencing and security measures to protect both drivers and passengers in the industry.
