A Derby taxi driver has been dismissed by Western Cars following allegations of fly-tipping in South Derbyshire, an incident that has triggered internal action by the company and an official investigation by local authorities. The controversy began after a video circulated online showing a man next to a Western Cars-branded vehicle near a lay-by in Willington. The man was allegedly confronted by a member of the public for dumping waste in the area.

In response to the viral video, Western Cars issued a statement outlining the steps it took once the footage came to its attention. The company confirmed that it suspended the driver on April 9, just hours after learning of the incident, and informed the relevant authorities. An inspection was conducted at the location on April 10, which confirmed the area had been cleared of waste. The company also shared video evidence of the cleaned site.

A Western Cars spokesperson stated:

"Western Cars wishes to provide an update regarding a video that has been shared online involving one of our affiliated drivers."

The spokesperson continued:

"The driver was suspended on Wednesday evening pending investigation. We notified relevant local authorities about the situation. We released an initial statement acknowledging the matter and our commitment to investigating it thoroughly."

Following the internal review, the company confirmed that the driver is no longer associated with Western Cars. Although the driver operated as a self-employed contractor, the firm emphasized the importance of maintaining high standards of behaviour.

The spokesperson further explained:

"Our drivers operate as self-employed contractors whilst representing our brand, and we uphold clear standards regarding professional conduct across our operation."

They added:

"Western Cars is committed to operating responsibly within our community. We expect professional conduct from all drivers who represent our brand. We would like to thank our customers and the wider public for their patience as we have worked to address this situation promptly and appropriately."

Meanwhile, South Derbyshire District Council confirmed that it had received a report on April 8 concerning the alleged fly-tipping in Willington. The council launched an investigation through its community safety enforcement team and is currently gathering evidence.

A spokesperson for the council stated:

"I can confirm that South Derbyshire District Council received a report on April 8 regarding an alleged fly-tipping incident in Willington."

They added:

"We take incidents of fly-tipping very seriously, and we are committed to ensuring that those responsible are held accountable for their actions."

The spokesperson reminded the public that fly-tipping is a criminal offence and encouraged continued vigilance. They noted that no further details could be shared at this stage due to the ongoing investigation.
