WeRide partners with Dubai’s RTA and Uber to introduce driverless taxis, aiming to revolutionize urban transport and position Dubai as a leader in autonomous mobility.

WeRide expands robotaxi services to Dubai in partnership with RTA and Uber
WeRide Inc., a leading autonomous vehicle technology company, has announced a strategic collaboration with Dubai’s Road and Transport Authority (RTA) and Uber to introduce driverless taxis in Dubai. The move is part of the city’s broader ambition to become a global leader in smart mobility and innovation-driven transport solutions. The partnership, outlined in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), marks a significant milestone in the advancement of autonomous ride-hailing services.
The deployment of WeRide’s autonomous fleet will integrate with Uber’s platform, allowing residents and visitors to book driverless rides through the app. This initiative is expected to enhance efficiency, reduce congestion, and contribute to Dubai’s sustainability goals by lowering carbon emissions. While the timeline for the rollout remains undisclosed, the agreement reinforces Dubai’s commitment to developing a cutting-edge public transport system.
WeRide, headquartered in Guangzhou, China, has been a pioneer in self-driving technology, operating in over 20 cities worldwide. Its latest expansion into the United Arab Emirates follows similar initiatives in the United States, China, Singapore, and France. The company recently secured France’s first Level-4 driverless public road testing permit, further cementing its position as a key player in the global autonomous vehicle industry.
Despite its technological advancements, WeRide faces financial challenges. Recent reports indicate a 10.13% decline in revenue and an EBITDA loss of $290.94 million over the past year. However, its product revenue saw a notable increase of 46%, driven by new vehicle launches. Analysts have highlighted the company’s unique business model, which combines vehicle sales, service fees, and revenue-sharing agreements with strategic partners such as Renault and Macif.
Jennifer Li, Chief Financial Officer of WeRide, emphasized the importance of the partnership with RTA and Uber in shaping the future of urban transport:
"This collaboration reflects our commitment to redefining mobility and accelerating the adoption of autonomous driving technologies in major cities."
Dubai’s government has long been an advocate of innovation in transportation. The city aims to have 25% of all journeys conducted via autonomous means by 2030, aligning with its Smart Dubai vision. The integration of WeRide’s fleet into Uber’s ecosystem is expected to play a crucial role in achieving this objective.
Beyond Dubai, WeRide is also launching a robotaxi service in Abu Dhabi, with plans to deploy 50 autonomous vehicles on Uber’s platform by mid-2025. The company’s growing presence in the Middle East highlights the increasing acceptance of self-driving technology in the region.
As the rollout progresses, industry experts will closely monitor regulatory approvals and public reception. The transition to autonomous mobility represents a transformative shift in urban transportation, positioning Dubai as a frontrunner in the adoption of driverless ride-hailing services.
