Dundee Drivers Raise Concerns Over Fife Taxis Operating Illegally

Taxi drivers in Dundee have raised concerns over Fife-based drivers allegedly operating within the city, accusing them of engaging in illegal competition. Dundee drivers claim that Fife taxis have been spotted multiple times in the area, picking up passengers without proper authorization. Local taxi drivers argue that this is negatively impacting their livelihoods, as they are competing with drivers who are not licensed to work in Dundee. The Legal Framework for Taxi Operations in Scotland

In Scotland, taxi licenses are granted by individual local authorities, and it is illegal for drivers to pick up passengers outside of their licensed area. Exceptions apply only when a driver is picking up or dropping off a passenger within their licensed area, returning to their area after completing a journey, or responding to a request made in their licensed zone. Fife taxis, which are required to display Fife Council plates, have a different fare structure than those in Dundee, further complicating the issue.

Growing Concerns Over Fife Drivers Operating in Dundee

Chris Elder, a representative for several taxi drivers through Unite the Union, has highlighted an ongoing issue with Fife taxis operating in Dundee. "There have been several incidents reported to Fife Council," Elder stated. "This one that was filmed has given us more evidence to highlight the problem and I’ve also sent this to the police."

Elder also expressed concerns that the rise in Fife drivers working in Dundee could have serious consequences for local drivers' earnings. "Fife drivers shouldn’t be stopping and picking up passengers in Dundee," he emphasized.

Dundee City Council has referred the matter to Fife Council for further investigation. Fife Council has confirmed that they will look into the issue and take appropriate action if necessary.
