A new electric taxi service has been introduced in Glasgow, offering customers a sustainable transport option for the first time. Glasgow Taxis, the largest black cab fleet in the UK outside London, has added the electric LEVC 'EV 6' to its fleet, allowing passengers to book an eco-friendly ride via the Glasgow Taxis app or through traditional phone booking.
The move aligns with the growing demand for green transportation, driven by government incentives, environmental awareness, and a shift in consumer preference, especially within the corporate sector. Scotland has already seen advancements in electric taxi adoption, including the introduction of Scotland’s first fully electric black cab, the Ford MAXiCab, which reflects the broader industry shift toward sustainable travel solutions.
Industry Response and Investment
Glasgow Taxis chairman, Dougie McPherson, emphasized the significance of this development, highlighting the company's commitment to adapting to industry changes.
McPherson stated:
"We’re delighted to introduce this new option for all customers, which is now visible at the booking stage on the Glasgow Taxis app."
He acknowledged the contributions of taxi operators who invested in this transition:
"Without them and that commitment, the service doesn’t exist, so once again we thank them for everything they do for the trade and the city."
The Future of Electric Taxis
The taxi industry has faced numerous challenges in recent years, but McPherson remains optimistic.
McPherson stated:
"Despite the unprecedented challenges the Glasgow taxi trade has faced in recent years – as it has in cities across the UK – I firmly believe our fleet of taxis has never looked better and that’s all for the benefit of the people who matter most, our customers."
Passengers can now access the electric taxi service via the Glasgow Taxis app, available on both the Apple App Store and Google Play.
