General Motors has partnered with Nvidia to integrate advanced AI in its vehicles, enhancing autonomous technology and manufacturing capabilities.

General Motors (GM) has entered into a strategic partnership with Nvidia to advance the use of AI in both vehicle technology and manufacturing operations. This collaboration comes after GM abandoned its strategy of developing custom in-house chips for autonomous vehicles, a shift brought on by the shutdown of its Cruise robotaxi service last year. GM will now utilize Nvidia's AI hardware to bolster its autonomous vehicle systems and improve factory processes.
The alliance highlights the growing trend among automakers to rely on established AI providers, such as Nvidia, rather than investing in proprietary technology. GM, which had initially integrated Nvidia chips into its Cruise robotaxi service, is now refocusing its efforts on enhancing AI for personal vehicles and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS). This decision follows setbacks with the Cruise business, which was shut down as part of a strategic realignment.
GM spokesperson:
"The new partnership represents a significant shift in GM’s approach to autonomous technology, moving away from its self-developed chips to leveraging Nvidia’s industry-leading AI solutions."
The collaboration is set to bring notable advancements, particularly in manufacturing operations. GM plans to use Nvidia’s platforms to train models for factory planning, streamlining production processes. Moreover, GM is integrating Nvidia’s autonomous systems into its future ADAS offerings, such as Super Cruise, which is expected to generate $2 billion in revenue annually within five years.
GM spokesperson:
"GM anticipates significant financial growth from its advanced driver-assistance systems, particularly with its subscription-based Super Cruise service."
