Taxi fares in Great Yarmouth could soon see a nearly 10% increase, with the Great Yarmouth Borough Council (GYBC) reviewing proposals to adjust rates. This comes amid rising operational costs for drivers, including fuel, insurance, wages, and vehicle maintenance. The proposed changes suggest increasing the standard two-mile fare from £7.40 to £8 and starting nighttime rates an hour earlier at 9 pm, raising fares to £9.30.

Driver Support for Proposed Fare Changes

The fare adjustment follows a consultation with 123 local taxi drivers, of whom 83% backed the increase. Sean Morley, spokesman for the Great Yarmouth Taxi Association, emphasized that fares have remained unchanged for over two years, and the hike is essential for sustaining the trade.

Concerns Over Reduced Demand

While most drivers support the changes, some worry higher fares may deter customers. Financial struggles faced by passengers could reduce demand for taxi services, potentially affecting overall revenue.

Road System Challenges

Taxi drivers in Great Yarmouth are also grappling with road system changes, such as restrictions preventing pickups near popular locations like the Troll Cart pub. These challenges further complicate the trade and highlight the need for sustainable solutions.
