Ipswich Borough Council is moving forward with plans to introduce a new five-place taxi rank on the Waterfront, situated next to Pizza Express and the Old Customs House. The proposal comes after the council approved a reduction of a taxi rank at Lloyds Avenue. The new rank aims to address the need for accessible taxis in the area, serving nearby bars and restaurants.
Next month, the council will submit the Traffic Regulation Order for public consultation, allowing Ipswich residents to provide feedback on the proposed changes. While the proposal has garnered some backlash, especially from taxi drivers, the council stands by the plan.
Some drivers have expressed concerns, citing a failed taxi rank on the Waterfront removed just a year ago due to lack of usage. One driver noted the previous attempt "failed miserably" as there weren’t enough customers. However, John Cook, the council’s portfolio holder for sports and communities, defended the new rank, saying:
"The proposed taxi rank at the Waterfront is in a prime location close to these hospitality venues, which will benefit drivers, passengers, and trade alike."
