London’s taxi drivers are frustrated by Lime bikes blocking taxi ranks, causing significant disruptions for passengers, especially those with mobility challenges. Despite complaints and a new policy promising action, Transport for London (TfL) is under fire for failing to enforce regulations.

Ongoing Issues for Taxi Drivers

There are over 600 taxi ranks in London managed by TfL. However, Lime bikes often obstruct these ranks, particularly in busy areas like Westminster. Andy Scott from London Taxi PR described the issue as “persistent and consistent,” with Lime bikes frequently parked in or near taxi ranks, blocking access for those who need it most.

Andy Scott stated:

"Drivers cite an increasingly difficult working environment, with low-traffic neighbourhoods, new cycle lanes, and 20mph speed limits complicating navigation."

Lack of Action Despite Complaints

Taxi drivers have reported the issue to both Lime and TfL, but the response has been inadequate. Even when Lime sends out a team to resolve the problem, the bikes continue to block taxi ranks shortly after.

Andy Scott commented:

"We’ve highlighted this consistently to Lime, and you always get that repetitive answer – ‘thanks for making us aware, we will send our team out.’"

TfL's Unfulfilled Promises

In November, TfL introduced a policy aimed at penalizing e-bike operators for leaving bikes on TfL land. However, Andy Scott claims that nothing has changed since the announcement, and no enforcement has been seen.

Andy Scott criticized:

"Here we are in January and we’re nowhere near seeing this being implemented."

Lime’s Response and Plans for Improvement

Lime acknowledged the issue, stating that it is working with TfL, local councils, and the Mayor’s office to improve parking. The company also plans to create more designated e-bike parking areas to alleviate overcrowding. Lime has introduced a system where riders who park in taxi ranks will be fined, with repeat offenders banned.

Hal Stevenson, director of policy for Lime, said:

"Parking has become one of the most significant challenges facing our industry, particularly in busy areas."

TfL’s Enforcement Strategy

TfL confirmed that its six-week notice period for compliance with the updated policy has passed and that enforcement is now underway. The first step involves sending warning letters to operators, but many taxi drivers remain skeptical about the agency’s ability to resolve the issue.

A TfL spokesperson stated:

"Targeted enforcement activity has commenced."
