London taxi drivers are facing increasing financial penalties as camera enforcement of red routes continues to issue fines for brief stops. Many drivers have been penalised for pausing to use facilities, enter shops, or wait for passengers, raising concerns within the industry. Recent cases, such as a driver fined £40,000 for unpaid car tax in London, highlight the growing financial burden on drivers facing strict enforcement measures.

Sam Houston, Senior Representative at the Licensed Taxi Drivers’ Association (LTDA), criticised the widespread issuance of Penalty Charge Notices (PCNs), arguing that enforcement measures disproportionately target taxi drivers.
Houston stated:

"Far too many members are getting tickets by camera because they have stopped briefly to go in a shop or use the toilet on a red route."

He further highlighted that regulations prohibit taxi drivers from waiting for passengers, whether for app-based bookings or if the passenger momentarily steps away.

Houston added:

"Taking a few minutes to find somewhere decent to park can save you a lot more in the long run."

Unlike yellow line restrictions, where an on-site traffic officer is required to issue fines, red route violations are detected instantly through CCTV cameras. This automated enforcement system has intensified concerns over fairness, as drivers have little flexibility in their operations.

In London, stopping on red routes without proper authorisation results in a £160 PCN. The fine is reduced to £80 if paid within 14 days but increases to £240 if left unpaid beyond 28 days. Red routes, marked with single or double red lines, are enforced to maintain smooth traffic flow. Double red lines indicate an absolute prohibition on stopping, while single red lines allow limited stopping as indicated by signage.

Revenue generated from PCNs is reinvested into London's transport infrastructure to improve road safety and efficiency. However, with camera enforcement replacing traditional traffic wardens, concerns remain about the system’s impact on taxi drivers’ livelihoods.
