A 64-year-old man was targeted by two individuals while withdrawing cash from a machine inside a Sainsbury’s store in Portswood. The incident, which occurred on February 20 at around 9:40 AM, involved threats and a scuffle before the thieves escaped.

William Manning, from Chilworth, was taking out £250 when one man threatened to "fill him in," while another quickly grabbed the cash. A struggle followed, leading all three to fall to the ground. Two shop assistants attempted to intervene, but the suspects fled, leaving most of the money scattered on the floor. Mr. Manning managed to recover £240.

This incident comes amid growing concerns over public safety, as similar cases have been reported elsewhere. Recently, a Southend cabbie was robbed of cash and cherished photos by masked thugs, highlighting the risks faced by individuals carrying money in public spaces.

Security Concerns and Response

Before the robbery, Mr. Manning noticed security guards asking one of the men, who was smoking, to leave the store. However, despite their presence nearby, the security team did not intervene when the theft occurred.

William Manning stated:

"I want to stress that I’m not a victim, but I am livid about the way it was allowed to unfold and dealt with."

He also criticized Sainsbury’s for not issuing an apology and expressed concerns about safety at the store.

Police Investigation and Store’s Statement

Hampshire police confirmed that a 34-year-old man from Winchester was arrested on suspicion of theft. He has since been released on bail until April 11 while investigations continue. Authorities have urged anyone with information to contact them.

A spokesperson for Sainsbury’s stated:

"Customer and colleague safety is our highest priority. Police attended an incident at our Portswood store yesterday, and we are supporting them with their investigation."
