Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council has approved a policy requiring all hackney carriage taxis to install CCTV, aiming to enhance passenger and driver safety. The decision, made during a cabinet meeting, aligns with industry standards where in-vehicle surveillance helps prevent disputes and improve security. A recent report on Barnsley’s requirement for CCTV in licensed taxis highlights the council's commitment to improving safety measures within the taxi industry.

The initiative is particularly focused on late-night travel when taxis experience higher demand. The council will act as the data controller for the footage, ensuring privacy compliance, while taxi owners must maintain the systems.

Implementation and Funding

Under the new regulations, all hackney carriage vehicles must display clear signs informing passengers about active CCTV recording. The cameras will operate whenever the vehicle is in service, capturing footage to address potential security concerns.

The £173,500 funding for the scheme has been allocated by the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority. Authorities anticipate that this initiative will deter misconduct and provide essential evidence in case of disputes or incidents.

Council's Justification and Industry Standards

Councillor Wendy Cain, cabinet spokesperson for public health and communities, highlighted the significance of the scheme:

"The installation of CCTV through this pilot scheme allows officers to support both drivers and the public to feel safe when working or travelling around the borough."

Councillor James Higginbottom, cabinet member for transport and the environment, welcomed the decision:

"The introduction of mandatory CCTV in hackney carriages is a standard practice across the industry, it provides safety, security and peace of mind, both for passengers and more importantly for the taxi drivers themselves."
