Millions of UK Vehicles on the Road with Safety Defects, Research Reveals

More than 1.5 million vehicles in the UK are potentially operating with known defects despite receiving MOT advisories, raising concerns about road safety and driver responsibility. According to data from Auto Express’ MOT checker service, one in seven motorists admitted to ignoring advisories on their vehicles, putting themselves and others at risk.

Prevalence of Vehicle Defects

The study found that nearly 15% of drivers disregarded MOT advisories, even though these warnings highlight potential issues that could worsen over time. Given that approximately 29% of MOT tests result in at least one advisory, this translates to over 1.5 million vehicles with unresolved mechanical or safety defects.

The most frequently flagged issues include faulty lights and electrical equipment, which make up a quarter (25%) of all advisories. Notably, 30% of these defects—ranging from failing batteries to clouded headlights—are classified as major concerns. Suspension problems are the next most common, representing 20% of all advisories, with 22% being deemed major. Perhaps most alarmingly, issues related to braking systems account for 16% of advisories, with 29% categorised as dangerous.

Expert Warnings on Road Safety

Paul Barker, editor of Auto Express, highlighted one particularly critical safety concern—tyre tread depth.

“The minimum tyre tread depth in the UK is 1.6mm, and going below this can seriously compromise a car’s ability to grip the road and/or slow down. The fact that so many drivers are ignoring tyre-related advisories—of which 60% are classed as ‘dangerous’—is deeply concerning. This suggests that more than 100,000 cars on UK roads could have seriously worn tyres.”

While driving with an advisory does not breach UK laws, experts stress that failing to address these warnings can lead to further deterioration, resulting in higher repair costs or even MOT failure in the future.
