TIER IV Introduces Robotaxi Prototype to Drive Autonomous Mobility Forward

TIER IV, a leading innovator in autonomous driving technology, has unveiled a new robotaxi prototype, marking a significant step in the advancement of self-driving transportation. The vehicle, designed without a steering wheel or pedals, will be showcased in Kanagawa Prefecture starting March 22. By making its autonomous driving system design openly available, TIER IV aims to accelerate industry adoption and strengthen Japan’s role in the global robotaxi sector.

The prototype utilizes an existing electric vehicle platform, optimized for autonomous operations. It integrates Autoware, an open-source software for self-driving technology, and features an advanced sensor system tailored for urban navigation. A key addition to the vehicle is a conversational AI agent, powered by a large language model, enabling intuitive voice interactions for passengers, including destination selection.

As part of its broader strategy, TIER IV is actively conducting robotaxi trials in Tokyo and collaborating with a taxi operator to collect real-world data. These efforts aim to refine autonomous driving algorithms and enhance the reliability of self-driving taxis. The initiative follows TIER IV’s selection for a government-backed mobility transformation project in 2024, highlighting Japan’s commitment to digital innovation in transportation.
