Norwich City Council consults public on regulations to enhance safety, comfort, and modern standards for taxi services.

Norwich City Council is inviting feedback from the public and the transport sector on proposed changes to taxi and private hire vehicle regulations. The consultation, open until 16 March 2025, seeks to update standards and ensure the safety and comfort of passengers across the city.
Focus on Driver Standards
The proposed updates concentrate on driver-related regulations to protect children, vulnerable adults, and the general public. Vehicle-specific standards will be addressed in a future phase of reforms.
Key Questions for Feedback
The consultation includes several key topics:
- Should in-vehicle CCTV be mandatory?
- Should drivers pass a geographical knowledge test?
- Should vaping be banned in vehicles, similar to tobacco?
- Should taxis have mandatory card payment facilities?
Council’s Statement
Councillor Matthew Packer emphasized the importance of aligning regulations with the latest Department for Transport guidance to ensure all passengers experience safe and reliable journeys.
