New Safety Regulations for Norwich Taxi Firms: Council’s Crackdown

Norwich City Council is reviewing its taxi licensing policy to enhance passenger safety, particularly for vulnerable adults and children. The move follows the conviction of a driver from one of the city's largest firms, who was found guilty of sexually assaulting three women.

Proposed Licensing Changes

The review could lead to significant changes, including more frequent DBS checks for drivers, with proposals suggesting checks every six months. Additionally, drivers may be required to undergo safeguarding and county lines training. The changes also aim to improve record-keeping, including logs of passengers and dispatchers, to ensure accountability.

Strengthened Complaints System

Norwich City Council intends to refine the complaints process, providing clearer guidance for passengers on how to report issues. This follows the case of Alexandru Tapurin, a driver for ABC Taxis, who was jailed for assaulting three women in just a few days.

Council’s Licensing Responsibility

The council is responsible for licensing and enforcing rules for taxis and private hire vehicles in the city. By law, it must update its licensing policy every five years to reflect new developments and maintain public safety.
