Inquest Begins for 79-Year-Old Taxi Driver Killed in House Fire

An inquest has been opened into the death of a 79-year-old retired taxi driver who lost his life in a house fire in Oldham. John Fairbrother was found deceased at his residence on Walkers Road after emergency services responded to a blaze on February 20, 2025. Firefighters discovered his body inside the severely damaged property, and his identity was later confirmed through dental records.

The inquest was formally opened at Rochdale Coroner's Court on March 20, where Assistant Coroner Julie Mitchell acknowledged the necessity of the legal investigation.

Julie Mitchell stated:

"Given the circumstances, I am satisfied that an inquest is needed."

She also extended condolences to Mr. Fairbrother’s loved ones.

"My condolences to the family and friends of the deceased."

A post-mortem examination has been conducted, but the official cause of death has not yet been determined. Authorities have ruled out any suspicious circumstances related to the fire.

Mr. Fairbrother's home, a supported living property managed by a housing association, suffered extensive fire damage. Photographs from the scene depicted a blackened and partially melted window frame, partially covered by a green tarpaulin. Investigators, equipped with protective gear, conducted examinations within the property to determine the cause and progression of the fire.

The fire was reported in the early hours of February 20, prompting emergency response teams to establish a security cordon around the site. The inquest has been adjourned for a pre-inquest review on April 22, with a full hearing scheduled for July 2.
