Pendle Borough Council Faces No Confidence Vote Over Taxi Dispute

A council leader in Pendle faces a no-confidence vote over a controversial taxi licensing policy, sparking debate among councillors on safety and costs.

Cllr Asjad Mahmood, leader of Pendle Borough Council, faces a no-confidence vote next Wednesday due to a dispute over taxi licensing policies. The vote follows a disagreement between the Liberal Democrats (Lib-Dems) and other councillors over the mandatory use of a phone app for routine taxi checks.

Lib-Dem Cllr David Whipp stated:

"This is an unacceptable threat to public safety that must be addressed."

Delays and Financial Concerns

Last month, Independent Cllr Mohammed Iqbal proposed delaying the February 2025 deadline for taxi drivers to use the app. He argued that only 30 out of 800 taxi drivers had signed up, making enforcement impractical. He also raised concerns about the potential £10 weekly fee, which could burden drivers during the cost-of-living crisis.

Cllr Iqbal questioned the app's necessity, stating:

"If this app is the best thing since sliced bread, why is Pendle the only area doing it?"

Divided Opinions on Taxi Safety

Cllr Nadeem Ahmed, leader of the Conservative group, proposed a middle-ground solution, suggesting paper checks as an alternative. Some councillors from both Independents and Conservatives believe the app is untested and should not be enforced.

Cllr Ahmed suggested:

"A middle ground approach, perhaps with paper checks, might be more practical."

Leadership Crisis

The no-confidence vote could lead to the election of a new council leader. Lib-Dems are also calling for a review of council priorities as the Labour government plans to reorganize local councils.

Cllr Kieran McGladdery, a former Tory licensing committee chairman, resigned over the row, citing "bad conduct or bad decisions."
