A significant shift in Plymouth’s taxi service landscape has occurred with the rebranding of a long-established taxi company and the introduction of a new app. The city’s well-known taxi firm, Taxifirst, is now operating under the new name, Take Me Plymouth, as it adapts to increasing competition from app-based taxi services, such as Uber, which has just received approval to operate in the city.
The Arrival of Uber and Smartzi
Last month, Plymouth City Council's licensing committee gave the green light for Uber and Smartzi to operate in the city, marking a major milestone for Uber’s expansion in Devon. Plymouth is the first city in Devon where Uber has received approval to offer services. This decision follows the increasing demand for app-based taxi services across the UK, with more cities embracing the convenience these services offer.
Rebranding and New Services
Take Me Plymouth, previously known as Taxifirst, is rebranding and launching a new, user-friendly app to compete in this rapidly changing market. The company, which was acquired by the Take Me group in 2021, is introducing fixed fares for its journeys, providing customers with upfront pricing. This move is aimed at offering greater transparency and convenience, helping passengers know the cost of their trip before it begins. Only minor adjustments will be made to fares in case of unexpected delays due to traffic.
Customer Benefits and the New Take Me App
A spokesperson from Take Me Plymouth explained the advantages of using the new app, emphasizing its ability to give users control over their fares. “If you prefer to know the exact cost of your journey upfront and avoid the hassle of drivers taking alternate routes, the Take Me app is perfect for you,” the spokesperson said.
The app allows passengers to select their pickup and destination points, instantly displaying the fixed fare based on the distance. The price is calculated using a fixed mileage rate, with minimal adjustments for waiting time caused by traffic or other delays. Waiting time is charged at a rate of 30p per minute when the vehicle is stationary. For instance, if a passenger’s estimated fare is £10 and a five-minute delay occurs due to traffic, the final fare would be £11.50.
The Role of Take Me Group and Its Partnership with Tower Cabs
Take Me Plymouth’s rebrand is part of a broader strategy by the Take Me group, which has positioned itself as a leader in the UK taxi industry. Following its acquisition of Taxifirst, the group is working to modernize the company’s services while maintaining its strong local presence. The company will also continue its partnership with Tower Cabs, ensuring that passengers across Plymouth have access to reliable transportation, even as new players like Uber and Smartzi enter the market.
Uber and Smartzi's Entry Into Plymouth
In addition to the rebranding of Take Me Plymouth, Uber and Smartzi have received a five-year private hire vehicle operator licence for Plymouth. However, drivers using these services still require a private hire driver’s licence and a vehicle licence issued by Plymouth City Council. This regulatory requirement ensures that all vehicles operating in the city meet the necessary standards for safety and service.
With these changes, Plymouth’s transportation sector is entering a new phase, offering customers more choices and greater convenience in how they travel across the city.
