Ride-Hailing Drivers to Log Off in Valentine’s Day Protest

IWGB is urging private hire drivers to strike on February 14, demanding fair pay, lower commissions, and improved working conditions from ride-hailing firms.

Private hire drivers in the UK are set to log off from ride-hailing apps on Valentine’s Day, February 14, in a coordinated strike against poor pay and working conditions. The protest, organized by the Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain (IWGB), calls on drivers to switch off Uber, Bolt, FREENOW, and Addison Lee between 4 PM and 10 PM. Some drivers will also gather outside the Mayor’s Office at City Hall between 4 PM and 6 PM to demand better treatment.

Growing Concerns Over Pay and Conditions

The IWGB argues that ride-hailing companies exploit drivers through low pay, high commission rates, and poor working conditions. The strike follows a separate protest by the App Drivers & Couriers Union (ADCU) on February 11, which is focused on Uber drivers. The ADCU is pushing for higher fares, reduced commission fees, and stronger driver rights.

IWGB spokesperson said via social media:

"Uber, Bolt and Addison Lee are slowly destroying drivers' lives. Not just our finances but our health, our relationships and our mental wellbeing are all being ripped apart. This Valentine's Day - we fight back."

With February 14 being a peak demand day, the strike is expected to impact ride availability and fares for passengers.
