Grab’s launch of GrabCab with a 10-year licence is reshaping Singapore’s taxi sector, forcing competitors to adapt as driver recruitment and technology become key factors.

Grab has officially entered Singapore’s regulated taxi sector with its new service, GrabCab, after securing a 10-year street-hail licence. This move makes Grab the sixth official taxi operator in the country and places it in direct competition with established players like ComfortDelGro. GrabCab will launch with a fleet of low- and zero-emission taxis, targeting 800 vehicles within three years.
A spokesperson from Grab stated:
"Grab’s expansion into street-hail taxi services signals a shift in its operational strategy. By integrating taxis into our existing ride-hailing platform, we can provide drivers with flexible earning opportunities, lower rental costs, and incentives. Our aim is to create a more sustainable and competitive taxi ecosystem in Singapore."
Industry analysts predict this development could significantly impact the local taxi market. By leveraging its existing app ecosystem, GrabCab can offer unique benefits such as free training, driver-matching services, and real-time data tools to improve driver earnings.
A transport analyst commented:
"Grab’s entry into the taxi sector isn’t just another fleet expansion—it’s a strategic move to dominate mobility services. Its ability to combine taxi and private-hire options under one platform gives it a competitive edge over legacy operators."
Despite regulated fares, driver recruitment and retention will play a crucial role in market leadership. GrabCab’s first taxis are expected to hit the roads by June, with strong early interest from drivers. Observers suggest that traditional operators may need to rethink their strategies to remain competitive in an increasingly tech-driven transport sector.
