Ongoing roadworks in Liverpool city centre have caused significant delays for taxi drivers, commuters, and businesses. A series of planned works, combined with emergency repairs, have led to heavy congestion and increased travel times across the area.
Taxi Drivers Express Frustration
Taxi drivers are experiencing longer journey times, with some trips taking up to three times longer than usual. One driver commented:
"It's an absolute joke. It's terrible, all the roads are blocked and congested, you can't move."
These delays are resulting in higher fares for passengers, frustrating both drivers and commuters.
Council Apologizes for Inconvenience
Liverpool City Council has apologized for the disruption. A council representative explained:
"Unfortunately, these programmed schemes have been impacted by unavoidable emergency works which has added to congestion at peak times."
The roadworks, which include repairs to a gas leak and a damaged signal box, were planned for several months but were impacted by the unforeseen repairs.
Public Transport Affected
The roadworks have also disrupted public transport, with many bus passengers forced to get off further from their usual stops. The council expects the gas leak and signal box repairs to be completed by the end of the week.
Active Travel Scheme
The roadworks in Catharine Street and Huskisson Street are part of the city's Active Travel Scheme, aimed at improving travel for pedestrians and cyclists. While most works are expected to be completed by next week, some resurfacing will continue into February.
