Taxi fares in the Scottish Borders are set to increase by 26.7% starting 14 April, following approval from the Scottish Borders Council (SBC) Executive Committee. The decision, made in December, comes as taxi operators face rising operational costs. According to a recent report on the Scottish Borders taxi fare hike, the proposed increase aims to address the financial strain on taxi businesses in the region.

Local taxi firms have reported a 144% surge in expenses, including fuel, insurance, and driver wages. The council, which typically reviews fares every 18 months, had delayed its assessment due to disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and other logistical challenges.

A council spokesperson stated:

"This fare adjustment is necessary to support local taxi businesses and ensure their sustainability amid increasing costs."

The timing of the fare hike, coinciding with school holidays, has raised some concerns. However, officials explained that this period allows taxi operators to update their meters efficiently and implement the changes without delays.

The public has until 20 March to submit objections. If no formal complaints are raised, the new fares will take effect as planned. The increase is expected to impact both residents and tourists who rely on taxi services in the region.

”The fare change aligns with broader economic trends affecting transport services."
