Waymo, Alphabet’s self-driving taxi subsidiary, is now providing more than 200,000 paid robotaxi rides per week, according to CEO Sundar Pichai. This marks a significant milestone, as the company’s weekly ride count has grown 20 times in the past two years. Waymo currently operates in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Phoenix, making it the largest commercial autonomous vehicle (AV) service in the U.S. As part of its continued expansion, the company is set to launch a public robotaxi service in Austin, Texas in partnership with Uber.

Expansion Plans and Growing Reach

Waymo’s autonomous driving system logs over 1 million miles each week, with plans for further expansion. The company is set to launch services in Austin and Atlanta in 2025 in collaboration with Uber. Additionally, a commercial robotaxi service is expected to begin in Miami by early 2026. These expansions will strengthen Waymo’s position as a leader in the AV industry.

Competitive Landscape

With Cruise shutting down its robotaxi program, Waymo has gained a competitive edge. Zoox remains a key rival, but while it has begun rolling out vehicles in San Francisco, it has yet to launch a commercial service. Waymo’s operational footprint continues to set it apart in the autonomous ride-hailing market.
