Stevenage Council partners with taxi drivers to address crime prevention and safety measures, focusing on 'spotting the signs’ and reporting potential crimes.

A recent forum held at Stevenage council offices brought together taxi drivers and private hire drivers to discuss safety measures and crime prevention efforts. Led by Senior Licensing Officer Gill Akroyd, the meeting focused on "spotting the signs" of potential crimes and ways drivers can play an active role in community safeguarding.

Spotting Crime and Protecting Vulnerable Individuals

Gill Akroyd addressed taxi proprietors, drivers, and private hire drivers on critical safety topics, including drink spiking, vulnerability, and child sexual exploitation. She outlined practical steps drivers can take if they suspect someone may be in danger or in need of assistance. The session also included information on the "Ask Angela" and "Ask Clive" campaigns, both initiatives designed to aid vulnerable individuals, and the progress of "Project Vigilant" in Stevenage.

Taxi Driver Safety Measures

Driver safety was a priority topic at the forum, with Akroyd highlighting protective measures for taxi and private hire drivers that could enhance their safety on the job. "Taxi drivers are key to safeguarding our communities, particularly women," Akroyd emphasized. "They are our eyes and ears on the ground and need to know how to spot red flags and when to contact us."

Upcoming Plans and Resources for Taxi Drivers

Taxi drivers and private hire drivers were encouraged to use resources such as the Herts Connected community messaging platform, which offers free updates on local police activity, Neighbourhood Watch alerts, Action Fraud, and notifications from the Police and Crime Commissioner. Akroyd noted plans for further meetings and initiatives to support drivers in staying informed and protected.
