Several taxi marshals have been suspended in Darlington following allegations of pressuring passengers to tip before boarding taxis, leading to an ongoing investigation.

Several taxi marshals in Darlington have been temporarily suspended after allegations surfaced that they pressured a passenger into tipping before being allowed to board a taxi. The incident, reported between December 20 and 22, has led to an internal investigation by the council’s contracted security provider.
Role of the Taxi Marshals
The marshals stationed at the Grange Road taxi rank are responsible for maintaining order and ensuring the safety of the public, especially during busy weekend evenings. Their presence is intended to deter anti-social behaviour and offer support to passengers waiting for transport home. The taxi marshal initiative is part of a broader strategy to improve safety in Darlington’s nightlife areas.
Safety Measures in Place
In addition to the taxi marshal program, the town has implemented other safety measures aimed at protecting its residents. A safe space called Number Forty, located on Skinnergate, provides assistance to individuals feeling vulnerable on Friday and Saturday nights. Furthermore, an emergency button at the Blackwellgate and Skinnergate junction allows direct access to the town’s CCTV monitoring team, ensuring continuous surveillance.
Ongoing Investigation
The council has not disclosed further details regarding the incident but emphasized its commitment to maintaining public trust and upholding the integrity of the marshal service. The investigation remains ongoing as the authorities assess the situation and determine appropriate actions.
Council and Security Company Response
Jim Garner, the cabinet member for stronger communities, has addressed the issue, stating that the behaviour alleged has never been endorsed. He reaffirmed that tipping should always be a voluntary choice for passengers, not something they should feel compelled to do. Upon learning of the incident, the security company immediately notified the council and removed the marshals from their duties during the investigation.
