Sheffield taxi licence fees and charges are set to rise for the first time in eight years, marking a significant shift for private hire drivers, hackney carriage drivers, and private hire operators. The changes, confirmed by Sheffield City Council, will take effect from February 2025.

The increase will impact both new licences and renewals, with a year-long driving licence fee increasing from £169 to £223. Similarly, renewal fees will jump from £97 to £223, creating a uniform pricing structure.

The Sheffield City Council attributed the fee hike to "increased costs to the service." Last year, the taxi licensing service incurred expenses exceeding £1,000,000, while generating only £830,000 in income. This resulted in a £170,000 deficit, necessitating the new charges to ensure the service's financial sustainability.

A public survey revealed widespread concern over the financial impact of the proposed changes. Many respondents highlighted how the increases could exacerbate pressures on individuals and businesses already struggling due to the ongoing cost-of-living crisis in the UK.

Implementation Timeline
