Grimsby Taxi Spot Checks Uncover Safety Violations and Fines

Authorities in Grimsby conducted North East Lincolnshire taxi spot checks to ensure compliance with licensing regulations. North East Lincolnshire Council’s Licensing Team, in collaboration with Humberside Police, stopped 26 taxis for inspection. As a result, five drivers received fines or warnings for various violations, highlighting ongoing efforts to maintain public safety.

Violations and Penalties

Among the drivers penalized, one was fined for parking on zigzag lines while waiting for a customer. Another was stopped for not displaying their driver ID badge, a requirement for all licensed taxi operators. One driver faced a £100 fine or the option to attend an educational course after authorities found their taxi’s roof light was not working. Additionally, two drivers were stopped due to issues with their tyres, including low tread depth, which poses a risk to passenger safety.

Authorities Emphasize Public Safety

Councillor Ron Shepherd, Portfolio Holder for Safer and Stronger Communities, emphasized the importance of adhering to taxi regulations.

Ron Shepherd stated:

"These are great results from an evening of inspections by Humberside Police and our Licensing Enforcement Team. Hackney Carriage drivers need to be aware of the rules they need to follow and should do so accordingly."

He also urged the public to use only licensed taxis, stressing that passenger safety remains a top priority.

”It is also important for members of the public to remember they should only use a licensed taxi when getting anywhere. Keep yourself safe and always make sure you are getting in a licensed and private hire taxi. The public’s safety is always our number one priority, and we want to reiterate how dangerous getting into an unlicensed taxi can be.”
