West Suffolk Council Considers Taxi Fare Increases
West Suffolk Council is set to discuss a proposal to raise taxi fares in the region, which could affect local passengers. The licensing committee will meet next Monday to consider a 20p increase on the basic fare for a one-mile journey, which is currently £5.40 between 6am and midnight. If approved, the fare would rise to £5.60. Other fares are also expected to increase, with a three-mile journey potentially costing £10.40, up from £10. A trip to Mildenhall could increase to £26.60, a rise of £1.40 from the current fare of £25.20.
Julia Wakelam, ward member for Abbeygate at West Suffolk Council, commented:
"I can understand why they want to increase their fares. Their expenses have gone up hugely, but it is going to be more bad news for the users. It is a balance I think where you draw that balance is difficult to say."
The proposed fare changes are part of the council's ongoing efforts to address rising operational costs for taxi services. The new fare structure would apply to six different tariffs, with pricing varying depending on the time of day and number of passengers. For instance, the first tariff covers trips between 6am and midnight, while higher tariffs apply for late-night journeys, public holidays, and for vehicles carrying five or more passengers.
In a report to the committee, the council emphasized that updating taxi fares is necessary to reflect increasing operating costs for hackney carriage vehicles. The report states:
"It is important that fares reflect the running costs associated with operating hackney carriage vehicles. Failing to review the fares could be detrimental to hackney carriage proprietors, particularly where the operating costs make the business financially unviable as it currently stands."
This move follows recent increases in parking charges in Bury St Edmunds, which have been implemented as part of broader efforts to adjust local service prices. The potential fare increase has sparked a debate about balancing the financial viability of taxi services with the affordability for passengers who rely on these services for daily transport.

As the council prepares to review the proposal, local residents and taxi operators will be watching closely to see how these changes could affect the cost of transportation in the area. The decision, which is expected to be made next Monday, could have significant implications for both taxi services and the passengers who depend on them.
