A Wigan taxi driver faces losing her license after her vehicle was suspended due to excessively dark window tints. Tracy Hibbert, a cabbie since 1991, purchased a 2019 Ford Transit Custom in August, only to have it fail a council inspection the following month.
Wigan Council requires vehicle windows to allow at least 20% of light to pass through. Tracy was given six months to meet the standard. However, following a fall that left her injured and unable to work, she couldn’t afford the £4,300 cost of replacing the windows.
Tracy explained:
"I just couldn’t raise the money because I wasn’t working after the injury."
The suspension means she cannot operate the van as a taxi and must now wait eight weeks to appeal. If unsuccessful, she risks losing her taxi plates permanently.
”Tracy was given six months to address the issue so the windows met Wigan Council’s requirement of letting through 20 per cent of light.”
The incident highlights the financial strain regulatory compliance can place on long-serving drivers already managing personal hardship.
