Elon Musk's involvement in far-right rallies and hand gesture sparks widespread backlash, with calls for a Tesla boycott spreading across Europe.

Following Elon Musk’s recent controversial actions, calls for a Tesla boycott have intensified across Europe, particularly after his speech at a far-right German rally and his hand gesture during Trump’s inauguration. These actions have triggered a significant backlash, with demands for action against Tesla’s presence in the European market.
Musk’s Controversial Speech at AfD Rally
On Saturday, Musk virtually addressed a rally hosted by the Alternative for Germany (AfD), a far-right nationalist party. During his speech, Musk expressed that the party should be proud of their German heritage. He controversially added that there was “too much of a focus on past guilt,” which many speculate was a reference to Germany’s Nazi history. Additionally, Musk commented on multiculturalism, suggesting it dilutes the uniqueness of cultures.
Nazi Salute Allegation at Trump’s Inauguration
Musk also drew attention at Trump’s inauguration on January 20, when his hand gesture was perceived by many as resembling a Nazi salute. This occurred just days before the anniversary of Auschwitz liberation, making it especially sensitive.
European Backlash
In response to Musk’s comments, Slawomir Nitras, Poland’s Minister of Sports and Tourism, condemned the remarks and publicly called for a Tesla boycott. He stated:
"We demand a boycott of Tesla and its electric vehicles."
In Germany, authorities have launched an investigation into images that depicted Musk making the Nazi-style salute at Tesla’s Berlin Gigafactory. Displaying such symbols is illegal in Germany, which has heightened the legal concerns surrounding Musk’s actions.
Musk’s Response and Ongoing Controversy
Despite the backlash, the U.S. Anti-Defamation League (ADL) defended Musk’s gesture, calling it an “awkward” mistake. However, Musk's mocking posts on social media only fueled the controversy further.
The situation continues to escalate, with increasing pressure on Tesla and Musk over their actions and the potential impact on the brand in Europe.
