Tesla Deploys Software Update for Rearview Camera Recall in U.S.

Last Updated: 1/12/2025

Tesla resolves a rearview camera issue in 239,000 vehicles with an over-the-air update. Affected owners may need a computer replacement.

Tesla has issued an over-the-air (OTA) software update for over 239,000 of its Model 3, Model Y, Model S, and Model X vehicles in the U.S. to address a significant issue with the rearview camera display. The recall, initiated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), was triggered by a problem with Tesla’s Autopilot and Full Self-Driving (FSD) computer, which can cause the rearview camera to stop functioning. This issue has affected vehicles from the 2023 to 2025 model years of Model 3 and Model S, and from the 2024 to 2025 model years of Model Y and Model X.

Recall Details and Affected Vehicles

The recall impacts a total of 239,382 vehicles due to a short circuit involving the primary and/or secondary power components, a problem that is related to a recall issued in November. Tesla has acknowledged 887 warranty claims and 68 field reports associated with this issue. The problem is considered rare, with an estimated 2% of the affected vehicles likely to experience the camera failure.

Solution: Software Update and Vehicle Modifications

To resolve the issue, Tesla has deployed an OTA software update that alters the power-up sequence of the affected vehicles, preventing the short circuit from occurring. For most owners who have not experienced any issues with their rearview cameras, no further action is required.

However, Tesla is advising those who have faced camera failures or issues with the Autopilot and FSD features to schedule a service appointment. The update applies to software versions 2024.44.25.3, 2024.45.25.6, or later, which have already been installed on the majority of affected vehicles. Owners who had issues prior to installing these versions will have their vehicle’s computer replaced free of charge.

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Involvement

The recall, initiated by the NHTSA, is part of the agency’s ongoing efforts to ensure that vehicle safety standards are met. Tesla is working closely with NHTSA to identify vehicles that may have experienced the shorting failure or issues leading to it. If an affected vehicle did experience this problem before the update, Tesla will replace the vehicle's computer at no cost to the customer.

No Further Action for Most Affected Owners

For owners whose vehicles have already received the necessary updates and have not experienced issues with the rearview camera or the Autopilot system, no further action is necessary. Tesla’s OTA software update has largely resolved the issue, providing a convenient and cost-effective fix for most vehicle owners.
