Tesla Announces Robotaxi Launch and Optimus Robot Production in 2025

Tesla has revealed plans to begin its robotaxi business and pilot production of its humanoid robot, Optimus, in 2025. CEO Elon Musk emphasized the importance of autonomous car services, describing them as critical to Tesla’s future.

Musk shared on a recent earnings call that Tesla is confident in launching unsupervised full-self-driving (FSD) cars as a paid service in Austin, Texas, by June 2025. He also confirmed that the company plans to roll out robotaxi services in California and additional U.S. markets later in the year. Musk stated:

"We are confident that we will launch unsupervised full-self-driving cars as a paid service in Austin, Texas, in June."

Tesla’s FSD system, which requires occasional driver intervention, is undergoing rapid improvements and aims to exceed human levels of safety.

Cybercab and Affordable EVs in 2026 and 2025

Tesla’s Cybercab, a vehicle designed specifically for robotaxi services, is set for mass production starting in 2026. In addition, the company remains committed to producing more affordable electric vehicles, with production expected to begin in the first half of 2025. These cars will incorporate aspects of Tesla’s next-generation platform and existing technologies.

Tesla’s Financial Update

Tesla’s fourth-quarter revenue rose by 2% to $25.7 billion, though it missed analyst expectations. Its net income fell by 71% to $2.3 billion, aligning with forecasts. Despite these financial results, analysts are focusing on Tesla’s ambitious future goals, particularly the development of Optimus humanoid robots.

Optimus Robots for Tesla Factories

Musk revealed that Tesla will begin producing several thousand Optimus robots in 2025, with initial tasks focused on Tesla factories. Musk further mentioned that the robots will eventually be capable of complex actions, saying:

"Optimus will be able to play the piano and thread a needle."
