INSHUR Launches On-Demand Insurance for Uber Eats Couriers in the Netherlands
INSHUR, a digital insurance provider specializing in on-demand coverage, has announced the launch of a new insurance product aimed at Uber Eats couriers in the Netherlands. This partnership with Uber marks a significant expansion of INSHUR's existing collaboration, which began in 2020 to provide insurance solutions for Uber drivers. The new insurance addresses an essential gap in the market, offering third-party liability coverage for couriers using two-wheel vehicles for food deliveries.
The insurance product is designed to fill a critical void in the coverage available to delivery workers. Typically, standard personal vehicle insurance does not cover incidents occurring while on the job, leaving couriers exposed to significant financial risks. The newly launched insurance will provide protection in case of material damage or bodily injury caused during the course of a delivery.
At the core of this offering is the on-demand insurance model, which allows couriers to activate coverage only during active delivery periods. This approach aligns insurance coverage with working hours, thus minimizing costs during times when couriers are not working. Traditional insurance policies, by contrast, tend to require fixed-term coverage regardless of usage, which often results in unnecessary costs for gig economy workers who experience fluctuating work schedules.
Hendrik Todte, Head of Insurance EMEA at Uber, stated:
"At Uber, we are committed to supporting the couriers who keep our platform moving. This partnership with INSHUR provides a flexible insurance solution that adapts to their needs, ensuring they can work with confidence and security."
The Netherlands is experiencing a notable growth in the demand for food and grocery delivery services, a trend that has prompted a focus on ensuring adequate protection for couriers. The Dutch grocery delivery market is forecast to see revenue growth of 11.5% by 2026, signaling an expanding need for tailored insurance solutions. In fact, the number of meal delivery service users is expected to reach 11 million by 2029, or 62% of the country's population.
This growth trajectory underpins the increasing demand for appropriate insurance products that cater specifically to the needs of couriers and delivery workers. As demand for delivery services continues to rise, both food and grocery, the role of insurance in safeguarding couriers becomes more critical than ever.
David Daiches, Chief Operating Officer and Co-Founder of INSHUR, stated:
"We understand the unique challenges faced by on-demand economy participants. Traditional insurance products often fall short when it comes to covering the specific needs required for the market. This product offers peace of mind and financial security to those powering the growing delivery sector in the Netherlands."
INSHUR, founded in 2016, operates in multiple markets including the US, UK, and Netherlands. The company focuses on providing embedded insurance solutions for the gig economy, working closely with digital platform companies like Uber and Amazon. Through its flexible insurance products, INSHUR has established itself as a leading provider of coverage for delivery and rideshare drivers in select European and North American markets.
As the gig economy continues to evolve, partnerships like the one between INSHUR and Uber represent a growing commitment to addressing the unique challenges faced by delivery workers. The launch of this on-demand insurance product is a significant step in enhancing the security and peace of mind of those who are at the forefront of the rapidly expanding delivery services sector.
