Uber Boat by Thames Clippers is set to introduce the UK’s first hybrid high-speed passenger ferries, designed to operate with minimal environmental impact. The new vessels are expected to launch in London in 2022 and 2023, marking a significant advancement in the company’s sustainable transport strategy.
The hybrid design will enable the ferries to operate solely on battery power while navigating through central London. Outside the city center, the boats will use biofuel engines to recharge their batteries during travel. This innovative technology allows the boats to recharge without relying on shore-based charging stations, making the system more efficient and flexible.
Embracing Sustainability in Transport
Sean Collins, co-founder and CEO of Uber Boat by Thames Clippers, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, highlighting the positive shift in the industry:
"After the challenges of the last two years that Covid has set upon businesses, in particular in the transport sector, I’m extremely excited to be increasing our capacity to meet the demands of our customers and partners."
He emphasized that the company’s long-standing commitment to environmental sustainability is now being realized with the new hybrid ferries. The project aligns with Uber Boat's goal to achieve net zero emissions by 2025 for all new vessels and by 2040 for its entire fleet, infrastructure, and environmental footprint.
A Step Toward Green Energy
In the longer term, the hybrid vessels are designed to be easily converted to green hydrogen or another renewable energy source, further reducing the environmental impact of the service. Uber Boat’s dedication to zero emissions is bolstered by Department for Transport (DfT) funding for ongoing projects aimed at advancing sustainable transport.
Innovation Through Collaboration
This announcement follows the company’s involvement in the EU Horizon 2020 TrAM project, which is focused on developing fully electric, zero-emission high-speed ferries. Uber Boat by Thames Clippers has been a key player in influencing the design specifications for these new vessels, ensuring they meet the demands for both sustainability and high-speed transport across the River Thames.
Strengthening the Workforce and Operations
As part of its commitment to growth and safety, Uber Boat by Thames Clippers has appointed a new Health, Safety, Environment, and Quality Manager, Gilmark D Mello. This move is designed to further enhance the company’s sustainability efforts while maintaining the highest safety standards in its operations. Additionally, the company is actively involved in three green marine feasibility projects funded by the Department for Transport, with outcomes expected by 2022 to guide further progress toward net zero.
