A former Uber driver who arrived in the UK nearly two decades ago has defied the odds to graduate from the University of Bristol. Abdullahi Abdi, 46, who worked as a driver and support worker to provide for his family, earned a degree in Social Policy despite significant challenges.

Abdullahi stated:

"If you think it’s impossible, I am proof that nothing is impossible."

Originally from Somalia, Abdullahi dedicated his achievement to his late brother, who was killed in a terror attack shortly after his own graduation. This deeply personal loss fueled Abdullahi’s determination to complete his education.

Overcoming Challenges as a Mature Student

Abdullahi moved to the UK nearly 20 years ago with limited English proficiency. For years, he focused on supporting his wife and family, both in the UK and Somalia, by working long hours as an Uber driver. His experience reflects the broader landscape of Uber services in Bristol, which continues to evolve with new ride-sharing options and policies affecting local drivers. When the pandemic struck, he also took up a role as a support worker.

Despite these responsibilities, Abdullahi enrolled in a foundation course in Arts and Social Sciences (CertHE) at the University of Bristol—an introductory program designed to help students transition into higher education.

Abdullahi shared:

"I heard from a friend about a Foundation programme for people like me who haven’t been to school in many years, which sounded great."

The foundation course prepared him for a full degree, eliminating the need for formal qualifications at the time of entry.

The Journey to Graduation

After completing the foundation course, Abdullahi pursued a degree in Social Policy. Balancing studies with work was demanding, and he struggled with assignments and deadlines. However, with unwavering support from his tutors and wife, he persevered.

Abdullahi said:

"I found the assignments tough, and meeting the deadlines on time was also a stretch. But my tutors were backing me all the way, as well as my wonderful wife, who always insisted she believed in me every time I complained about the assignment workloads."

Abdullahi’s success story was highlighted at the launch of a report examining the barriers refugees face in accessing higher education. The report, co-authored by Professor Corinne Squire, emphasizes the challenges and opportunities available to refugee students.

Professor Squire stated:

"I hope Abdullahi’s story is an inspiration to others who may be thinking they missed their chance or that the obstacles are simply too high."

Currently, only 7% of refugees worldwide access higher education, compared to 38-40% of the general population. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) aims to raise this figure to 15% by 2030.

Giving Back to the Refugee Community

Throughout his studies, Abdullahi dedicated time to helping other refugees navigate the higher education system. His story serves as a reminder of the importance of institutional support in enabling underrepresented students to succeed.

Professor Palie Smart, Associate Pro Vice-Chancellor for Global Civic Engagement at the University of Bristol, praised his perseverance:

Professor Smart said:

"Abdullahi’s story is so humbling and such a credit to all his hard work and tenacity. It is especially heartening that despite facing many challenges himself, he still made time to help others in similar situations."

Now a graduate with a 2:1 degree, Abdullahi encourages others to pursue their ambitions despite difficulties.

Abdullahi said:

"Even if things aren’t heading in the right direction or no matter what the barrier is, there’s always a way. There is tremendous support to call upon, so if you’re willing, I urge everyone to just go for it."
