Uber has installed a geofence around Nuneaton town centre's taxi rank to prevent its drivers from picking up passengers illegally. The geofence aims to ensure that only licensed Hackney carriages use the designated rank, addressing concerns from local taxi services. This comes after previous challenges Uber faced with its operations, such as setbacks in Northern Lincolnshire .
Details of the Geofence
In an email to Nuneaton Council, Uber confirmed applying the geofence to the official Hackney taxi rank. They also reminded PHV drivers not to use taxi ranks. Uber explained that geofencing is not applied in some busy areas where traffic is not disrupted, particularly at night.
John Igoe's Reaction
John Igoe, Director of MI Taxis, expressed approval but noted that Uber drivers continue to wait outside nightclubs. He stated:
"I am really pleased with this result but it is just the beginning. Uber drivers are still ranking up outside the nightclubs .... We need the geofence area expanding in Nuneaton, the fight goes on!"
Uber emphasized its commitment to reducing disruptions by ensuring drivers follow regulations, while acknowledging that challenges remain, especially in busy nightlife areas.
