Uber and Volkswagen to Launch Robotaxi Service in Los Angeles by 2026
Uber and Volkswagen have announced a significant partnership aimed at deploying a commercial robotaxi service in the United States, beginning with Los Angeles by late 2026. The initiative will utilize Volkswagen’s autonomous electric ID. Buzz vehicles, marking a notable step forward in the development of urban mobility solutions powered by self-driving technology. This effort is consistent with Uber’s broader strategy, which includes similar collaborations such as its upcoming robotaxi service launch with Waymo in Atlanta.
Initially, the robotaxi fleet will not be fully autonomous. Human safety operators will be present behind the wheel to monitor performance and ensure passenger safety during the early stages of deployment. The transition to fully driverless operations is anticipated in 2027, contingent on regulatory approvals and successful testing phases.
Volkswagen Autonomous Driving Mobility & Transport (ADMT), a subsidiary focused on autonomous vehicle development, will lead the technical efforts. ADMT is expected to commence testing in Los Angeles later this year after securing necessary permits from the California Department of Motor Vehicles. These permits govern both testing and eventual commercial deployment. Simultaneously, the California Public Utilities Commission will oversee permits for the commercial ride-hailing aspect.
Volkswagen ADMT first launched in July 2023, following the closure of Argo AI, a previous autonomous venture backed by Volkswagen and Ford. After discontinuing support for Argo, Volkswagen partnered with Mobileye, a leader in autonomous technology, to power the ID. Buzz fleet. This collaboration has since strengthened, aligning with Volkswagen’s broader strategy to advance mobility solutions without building its own ride-hailing service.
Despite not planning to operate a ride-hailing platform, Volkswagen appears focused on producing autonomous vehicles and fleet management software for partners such as Uber. This partnership signifies the convergence of manufacturing expertise and ride-hailing infrastructure to streamline the integration of autonomous vehicles into real-world environments.
Christian Senger, CEO of Volkswagen Autonomous Mobility, stated:
"Volkswagen is not just a car manufacturer — we are shaping the future of mobility, and our collaboration with Uber accelerates that vision."
"What really sets us apart is our ability to combine the best of both worlds–high-volume manufacturing expertise with cutting-edge technology and a deep understanding of urban mobility needs."
Uber continues to deepen its involvement in autonomous transportation, having established over 14 partnerships across the AV sector. The ride-hailing giant recently launched a robotaxi service with Waymo in Austin and is preparing for another rollout in Atlanta, reinforcing its commitment to transforming how people move through cities.
