Uber has officially launched its ride-hailing service in Norwich, marking the company's expansion into Norfolk. The firm states that its entry into the city will provide passengers with more transportation options and create new earning opportunities for local drivers.

Andrew Brem, Uber's UK country manager, highlighted the potential benefits of the service, explaining that it could boost the local economy and address transport needs. The company also emphasized that its drivers would have access to worker benefits such as holiday pay, sickness protection, and pension plans, along with formal representation through the GMB Union.

”Unmet demand in Norwich will offer excellent earning opportunities for local drivers”

Despite these assurances, the Norwich Black Cabs Association has expressed concerns about Uber’s arrival. Some taxi drivers worry that the increased competition could reduce their earnings. According to Kierran Greaves, a committee member of the association, the introduction of Uber could have mixed effects on the industry.

Kierran Greaves commented:

”It can be a good thing but it can be a bit of a bad thing. It’s good for customers and members of the public, so they can get different ride-sharing apps and private hire.”

However, he argued that Norwich already has a sufficient number of private hire vehicles. He pointed out that during most days, cars are readily available in key locations such as Prince of Wales Road and Castle Meadow.

”It’s only on the Friday or Saturday nights where people have trouble getting private hire vehicles.”

The distinction between black cabs and Uber was also a concern. Unlike Uber, black cabs can be hailed directly from the street without a prior booking. Greaves noted:

”With taxis you can flag them down, wave at us if we've got our lights on and you can jump in. But you can't do that with private hire.”

Uber claims its service is already in demand, stating that thousands of users in Norwich have been opening the app weekly to book rides. While Uber’s arrival provides passengers with more transport choices, its impact on local taxi drivers remains a point of debate.
