With 30% of London Miles are EV, Uber's Claims Electric Vehicle Milestone

Last Updated: 1/13/2025

Uber has reached a significant milestone in London, where 30% of all miles driven by Uber drivers are fully electric, with ongoing efforts to expand EV adoption.

Uber is making strides in its commitment to sustainability, with a significant focus on electric vehicles (EVs) and environmentally friendly innovation.

Aiming to become a zero-emissions platform by 2040, the company has achieved a major milestone in London, where 30% of all miles driven by Uber drivers are now fully electric. Andrew Brem, Uber’s UK General Manager, stated:

“There’s still a lot of work to do” to make EVs the default choice for drivers.

Progress in London’s Electric Transition

London has become a focal point for Uber's global EV efforts. Over 30% of all miles driven by London Uber drivers are fully electric, a dramatic improvement from nearly zero just a few years ago. This progress underscores London’s leadership in sustainable transportation and air quality improvement.

Andrew Brem highlighted that the adoption of EVs in London has been significant, driven by Uber’s dedicated initiatives to support drivers in making the switch.

Support for Drivers Transitioning to EVs

To encourage the adoption of EVs, Uber offers a range of incentives for its drivers. These include £5,000 grants to assist with EV purchases and exclusive discounts from manufacturers. Additionally, a recent partnership with Octopus Energy will provide 1,000 UK drivers with free home chargers and discounted public charging.

Andrew Brem noted:

“Drivers are benefiting from exclusive pricing from a number of EV manufacturers, which, combined with the grants, has led to large numbers of drivers switching to EVs.”

Global Expansion and Sustainability Goals

Uber has introduced the “Uber Green” service, now available in over 200 cities, allowing users to book hybrid or fully electric rides. London has also been selected as one of 40 cities where Uber is launching an EV-only service. These efforts aim to strengthen Uber’s presence as a sustainable platform while enhancing the visibility of premium EVs like the Lotus Eletre.

Globally, Uber has tripled the number of EVs on its platform to 180,000 within a year. This progress reflects Uber’s dedication to its long-term zero-emissions goals.

Challenges and Future Plans

Despite progress, challenges remain in making EVs the obvious choice for drivers. High costs, infrastructure limitations, and market dynamics hinder broader adoption. Andrew Brem acknowledged:

“We haven’t yet reached the tipping point where an EV is the obvious choice for drivers.”

Uber plans to intensify its efforts in 2025 to address these barriers and ensure EVs become more accessible to drivers across the UK.
