Waymo, the leader in autonomous driving technology, will begin testing its driverless Jaguar vehicles in Miami in 2025, with plans for a commercial launch in 2026. The company already operates over 150,000 trips per week in major U.S. cities, including Phoenix, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Austin.
Expansion to New Markets
As part of its ongoing expansion, Waymo is targeting Miami as its next market for driverless taxis. In early 2025, the company will begin testing electric Jaguar I-PACE vehicles in the city, with a commercial service expected to start in 2026.
This comes shortly after Waymo expanded its Los Angeles service to all passengers, covering a significant 80-square-mile area. In Phoenix, the company currently operates around 200 vehicles, underscoring its established presence in the U.S. market.
Electric Vehicle Fleet
Waymo’s taxi fleet exclusively uses electric Jaguar I-PACE vehicles, which have been tested in demanding weather conditions in Florida, particularly during rainy periods. This has helped the company refine its autonomous driving technology, making the vehicles better equipped to handle various driving environments.
Future Plans
In addition to launching in Miami, Waymo is planning to extend its services to Atlanta and Austin in the coming year. These efforts are part of Waymo’s broader vision, which began in 2009 as a secret self-driving car project by Google and officially became Waymo in 2016.
