A ground breaking autonomous driving pilot project has begun in Switzerland, marking a significant milestone in smart mobility. Co-funded by the Canton of Zurich and Schweizerische Bundesbahnen (SBB), the initiative is managed by the Swiss Transit Lab (STL) and supported by WeRide, a leading developer of L4 autonomous driving technology.
Deployment And Coverage of Robotaxis and Robobuses
The project will see the phased introduction of dozens of autonomous vehicles, including WeRide's Robotaxis and Robobuses. The first fleet is scheduled to operate in the second quarter of 2025, providing unmanned transportation services over a five-year period.
Initially, services will be available in the Furttal region, covering towns such as Otelfingen, Boppelsen, Hüttikon, and Dänikon. Plans for expansion include neighboring areas like Buchs, Dällikon, and Regensdorf. Residents will have the convenience of booking rides via the ioki app, a leading European on-demand mobility platform.
Collaborative Efforts in Smart Mobility
The project is supported by SBB, which manages a vast 3,000-kilometer railway network, and the Canton of Zurich, Switzerland's most populous area. Under the management of the STL, this collaboration aims to transform public transportation, offering innovative and efficient travel options for Swiss residents.
