The GMB Union has issued a call for increased transparency in the algorithms used by gig economy platforms like Uber, Deliveroo, and Uber Eats to determine workers' pay. This demand is central to addressing growing inequality and the rising cost of living for gig workers. The union seeks clarity on how and when workers are paid to ensure fair negotiations on pay and working conditions.
Issues with Algorithmic Pay Systems
Eamon O’Hearn, GMB’s National Officer, emphasized the importance of understanding the algorithms that control pay rates. He explained that gig economy platforms use complex systems to set rates, allocate work, and even suspend accounts. However, these algorithms are often kept secret, leaving workers with little knowledge of how decisions are made, making it difficult to challenge unfair practices.
Eamon O’Hearn stated:
"How much members are paid is a crucial building block of negotiation between workers and bosses."
Call for Transparency and Reform
Campaigners, including Privacy International, the Trade Union Congress, and Amnesty International, have joined the push for reform. They argue that algorithmic systems should be made more transparent to protect workers' rights. One proposal is to introduce a public register detailing the algorithms used by platforms. Other recommendations include offering clear explanations of algorithmic decisions and allowing workers to test these systems for potential flaws or biases.
Eamon O’Hearn stated:
"GMB needs to know how and when members are paid if we're going to be effective in raising their earnings and addressing inequality."
Importance of Dynamic Pricing and Cost of Living
O’Hearn also highlighted the role of dynamic pricing in the pay systems, with many workers struggling to keep up with the rising cost of living. GMB members are seeking greater transparency in how their earnings are calculated to ensure they can maintain fair compensation amid these economic challenges.
