A man who stole a taxi at knifepoint and led police on a dangerous 100mph chase through Derby city centre has been sentenced to six years in prison.
Leonard David, 26, of Sinfin Lane, Derby, ordered a taxi from Hartington Street on 28 October. Upon arrival, he demanded money from the driver, assaulting him repeatedly before stealing the vehicle. The attack continued even after the driver handed over £10, with David threatening him with a knife, stating:
"Do as I say or I will kill you."
Incidents of taxi-related crimes have been a growing concern, with recent cases such as the Smethwick taxi carjacking attempt highlighting the risks faced by drivers across the UK.
High-Speed Pursuit and Arrest
David took control of the Volkswagen Passat and sped off towards Osmaston Road. Police were alerted and attempted to stop the stolen taxi on London Road, but he ignored their orders, accelerating dangerously. He drove through red lights, pedestrian areas, and reached speeds of up to 100mph (160km/h).
For safety reasons, the police called off the pursuit when the taxi reached Markeaton roundabout. However, the abandoned vehicle was found shortly afterward on Thorntree Lane. Officers later spotted a man matching David’s description leaving a casino on Exchange Street. When approached, he attempted to flee but was apprehended.
Sentencing and Police Statement
At Derby Crown Court, David pleaded guilty to robbery, dangerous driving, and possession of a knife. He received a six-year prison sentence and a six-year driving ban, with a requirement to pass an extended driving test before regaining his license.
PC Natalie Morton commented on the case:
"The level of violence and aggression David displayed was shocking and the fact he twice tried to evade capture is a clear sign that he did not want to face the consequences of his actions. I am pleased that he has now been brought to justice and is behind bars for these offences."
