The City of Wolverhampton Council is set to approve the use of panic switches in taxis to enhance driver safety. If passed, the measure will allow drivers to activate momentary audio recording inside their vehicles when they feel threatened. Currently, while taxi drivers can install CCTV cameras, continuous audio recording is prohibited. The council's regulatory committee will decide on the proposal on 12 March. The move comes amid broader discussions on strict new rules affecting Wolverhampton taxi drivers, which have led to protests from the industry.

Rising Concerns Over Driver Safety

The decision follows a six-week public consultation, which gathered over 1,300 responses. Data revealed that 96% of respondents supported audio recording for driver protection, while 88% believed it would also safeguard passengers. Additionally, 70% of taxi drivers expressed interest in installing the system.

Authorities referenced the 2022 killing of taxi driver Anakh Singh as an example of the dangers faced by drivers. Singh was fatally attacked by a passenger over a fare dispute.

Wolverhampton Joins Other Councils in Safety Measures

If approved, Wolverhampton will join cities like Sheffield, York, and Cambridge in permitting audio recording in taxis. The measure aligns with broader efforts to improve security for drivers operating in the taxi industry.
