Hundreds of taxi drivers in Wolverhampton protest against new council rules requiring them to retake assessments, risking a one-year licence suspension if they fail.

Wolverhampton taxi drivers staged a protest on March 3, opposing new regulations requiring them to retake training courses. Around 100 private hire and black cab drivers gathered at the University of Wolverhampton Science Park on Glaisher Drive to express their concerns. This comes as Wolverhampton expands cross-border checks for private hire vehicles, reflecting broader regulatory changes affecting the local taxi industry.
New Training Requirements Spark Opposition
In January 2024, Wolverhampton Council introduced a rule mandating that drivers licensed before 2019 undergo reassessment. Drivers who fail three times could face a one-year licence suspension. The council defended the rule, emphasizing its commitment to passenger safety.
A council spokesperson stated:
"We are committed to ensuring safe travel for all passengers."
